New York based studio Grzywinski+Pons was commissioned to design the interiors of Urban Villa, a boutique hotel placed in Brentford, West London.
Their proposal for the hotel ground floor is a multifunctional reception which serves as bar and café too. They took inspiration from the traditional English pubs, where the barman doubles as an innkeeper so you can order your drink and ask for a room at the same time.
The hotel is located in a new-built tower, meaning that all the interior facings, white walls and suspended ceilings, were recently finished. But the architects found the space rather “prosaic and sterile” so they decided to get rid of the superfluous layers, revealing the structure and building services. That way, they add character to the space and a more rustic atmosphere.
Triangular patterned tiles define the cafe area using a pastel colours palette. The same colour shades spreads to the furniture, providing them with an immaterial look and making the texture of the raw concrete walls, the new timber suspended ceilings and the planting-covered wall really stand out.
The architects conceived an open-plan space but they add some intimacy by using mint-green mesh screens in the seating area. “We wanted to balance the abundant glazing and high ceilings with vertical breaks, warm and authentic materials, lush vegetation and texture”, they said.
If you happen to be in London, don’t think it twice, pay them a visit and enjoy a pint!
